Running InterBase on 64 bit Operating Systems
Abstract: Because 64 bit Operating Systems support 32 bit applications, InterBase runs fine on 64 bit Operating systems
Q. Does InterBase run on 64 bit Operating Systems?
A. InterBase is a 32 bit application. Because 64 bit Operating Systems support 32 bit applications, InterBase runs fine there. As of this writing (11/28/07) InterBase is not certified on any 64 bit Operating Systems, but we do not know of any issues, nor do we expect any.
As of this time, we have no timeline for a 64 server or client, so what features this product might have are unknown. However, there are only 2 features we see a 64 bit version could uniquely provide:
- Support for 64 bit client applications
- Allowing a cache larger than 2 GB. (If your usage of InterBase is such that your cumulative cache requirement is larger than 2 GB, but no particular database needs it, you can solve this problem by using the multiinstance feature of InterBase 7.x and later.)
As you can see, a 64 bit version of InterBase does nothing for most users at this time.
