Installing JBuilder 2007
Troubleshooting Your JBuilder 2007 Installation
General
If the installation can be performed successfully on another machine (with
the same OS platform), the resulting installation directory can be copied
from one machine to another. This can be the easiest way to workaround installation
problems, but is only useful when other machines on a network are available.
Nothing happens after the installation program is started
If the main installation program does not automatically launch when the
DVD is inserted into the DVD drive:
- Navigate to the DVD drive.
- Navigate to the
Disk1\InstData\VM\ directory.
- Double-click on the installation executable (
jbinstall.exe
on Windows, install_mac_osx.sh on the Macintosh, or install_linux.sh for
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 ).
Error -1 when starting the installation program from a DVD
This error occurs when the DVD driver is having trouble reading from the
DVD. In this case, try copying the contents of the DVD into a temporary
directory on your hard drive and then launch the installer from that location.
If the files cannot be copied from the DVD to the hard drive because of
read errors (for example, error -1, read errors, etc.), check the DVD for
scratches. If the DVD is visibly damaged, please call disk replacement to
be issued new media by calling 831-461-9190.
If the contents of the DVD still cannot be copied to the hard drive, an
alternative is to simply download and install the appropriate trial version
of JBuilder. The trial product will be converted to a full product by using
your serial number during registration. Make sure that you choose the download
that matches the license (that is, a serial number for Developer will NOT
activate the Enterprise Trial). The Trial downloads may be accessed from
the following location:
http://www.codegear.com/downloads
In this case, make sure to download and install any supplementary files
on the same page as the main download (e.g documentation, samples, extras).
The main installation program does not launch when the DVD is inserted
To eliminate possible conflicts with other third-party software, disable
anti-virus software (e.g. stop the service), exit out of any other currently
running software, and then retest the installation.
In Windows XP, you can automatically do this using the msconfig.exe
tool to restart your system in a diagnostic mode that prevents third-party
services from starting up. To do this:
- Choose Start|Run.
- Enter
msconfig and click OK.
- Under the General tab, select Diagnostic Startup and click OK.
- Restart your system and start the JBuilder 2007 installation program
again.
After successfully installing JBuilder, repeat these steps, changing Diagnostic
Startup to your usual Startup mode.
The installation programs seems to start, but then freezes at the splash
screen
To troubleshoot installation graphics driver issues, try the following:
- First, visit the website of the manufacturer of the graphics card to
download and install the latest driver.
- Windows XP: If the issue is not resolved, try turning down the graphics
card acceleration. To do this:
- Right-click on the desktop.
- Choose Properties|Settings|Advanced|Troubleshoot.
- Set the Hardware acceleration to None.
- Start the JBuilder installation program again.
- The installation progress bar may stay near the end for a very long
time, making it seem like the installation program has hung. Do not end
the program; the installation will complete successfully after a period
of time.

Checking out a concurrent license
When you're using a concurrent license for your CodeGear product, you might
have occasions where you want to work offline, rather than connected to
the License Server. The License Manager provides Check Out and Check In
features that allow you to work offline. When you check out a license, you
need to specify the duration of the check out. Once you've completed your
offline work, you can check in the license to return it to the license pool.
The client product has to be able to reach the License Server in order to
check in the license.
Concurrent licenses are listed on the server in a userlist-concurrent.txt
file. The maximum checkout time is set by the server administrator for each
user.
Follow these simple steps to check out a license:
- Choose Tools|License Manager to open the License Manager.
- Right-click the Concurrent Network License node in the tree on the left
and choose Check Out License.
- Enter the duration time in hours in the License Duration (hours) field.
You can't exceed the maximum checkout time set by your server administrator.
See your administrator for the maximum setting.
- Click OK to close the Checkout License dialog box. A Checkout Successful
message displays. Click OK to close it. A red check mark displays next
to the Concurrent Network License node to indicate that you're disconnected
from the License Server and can use the product offline.
Important: Notice that the remaining checkout time is
displayed next to the Concurrent Network License node in parenthesis.
For example, Concurrent Network License (1 hour left). To refresh the
checkout time, right-click the Concurrent Network License node and choose
Refresh Time Left.
Checking in a concurrent license
Once you've completed your offline work, you need to check the license
in to return it to the license pool.
Follow these simple steps to check in a license:
- Choose Tools|License Manager to open the License Manager.
- Right-click the Concurrent Network License node in the tree on the left
and choose Check In License.
- Click Yes in the Confirm License Checkin dialog box to check the license
in.
